Covered California health insurance plans — and all health plans in the individual and small-group markets — are sold in four primary levels of coverage: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The breakdown of costs that you pay (dark shading) and costs the plan pays (lighter shading) for the standard Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers is shown below.

metal-tiers

  • Bronze: On average, your health plan pays 60 percent of your medical expenses, and you pay 40 percent.
  • Silver: On average, your health plan pays 70 percent of your medical expenses, and you pay 30 percent. In some cases, individuals may qualify for an Enhanced Silver plan. This means that when they choose a Silver plan, they have – based on their income – enhanced out-of-pocket savings through lower co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles. Individuals in these savings categories get the benefits of a Gold or Platinum plan for the price of a Silver plan. In the three categories of Enhanced Silver, the plan pays either 94 percent, 87 percent or 73 percent of expenses, with the enrollee responsible for the rest.
  • Gold: On average, your health plan pays 80 percent of your medical expenses, and you pay 20 percent.
  • Platinum: On average, your health plan pays 90 percent of your medical expenses, and you pay 10 percent.

In addition to the metal tiers, Covered California offers a minimum coverage plan for those who qualify.

  • Minimum coverage plan: If you are under 30, you may be able to buy an additional health insurance plan option called minimum coverage plan. These plans usually have lower premiums and mostly protect you from worst-case scenarios.

Dental Coverage: All Covered California health insurance plans offer embedded pediatric dental coverage. This means that dental insurance for children is included in the price of all health plans purchased in the exchange. In addition, Covered California now offers supplemental dental coverage for adults, through optional family dental plans.

A Dental plan works very similar to a medical insurance plan. You pay a specific monthly Premium, and are therefore entitled to certain benefits, including regular checkups, cleanings, x-rays, and certain services required to promote general dental health. Some plans will provide broader coverage and others will require a greater financial contribution on your part when services are rendered. Plans may or may not provide coverage for certain types of oral surgery, dental implants, or dentures.

Although there is no one “best” dental insurance plan, some plans may work better than others for you and your family. Plans differ primarily in how much you’ll have to pay monthly (Premium) for your coverage and how much you’ll have to pay when dental services are rendered. Some plans will require that you pay a certain co-payment for services, or meet a specific deductible before the dental plan begins payment. Other plans may limit coverage to a specific dollar-amount maximum per year.

For more information about dental plans you can contact us. We can help you to find suitable dental plan at reasonable monthly premium.

Vision Coverage: Covered California offers consumers a pathway to quality vision care. Vision care benefits for children are included in all health plans purchased through the exchange. Vision care for adults is not offered in Covered California health plans, but Covered California works with certain vision insurance companies to offer vision coverage directly to consumers.

If routine exams are all you need, the cost of insurance might not be worth it. Take a look at the cost for one year of vision insurance compared with the cost of an eye exam. If you do need corrective lenses in addition to preventive care, you’re probably better off with the insurance.

Vision insurance and vision benefits plans typically cover the cost of an annual eye exam and prescription eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

Deciding whether to purchase vision care insurance can be tricky, it’s not unilaterally a good or bad deal. Whether it makes sense for you to purchase a policy depends on a number of factors, such as the policy options you have to choose from, the types of vision care products and services you need, and how frequently you need them. To make sure you’re getting a product that will be valuable to you, do the research and the math before you sign up.
